Betriz “Betty” Arvalo is a Restaurant General Manager (RGM) for Shamrock Company’s North Aurora, IL Taco Bell. She’s mother to four children of her own, and also a restaurant full of Team Members who look to her for advice. Fortunately for everyone in Betty’s life, Shamrock has created a supportive environment for anyone trying to juggle the demands of work and home.
“This is a good job for mothers.” – Betty Arvalo, RGM
Betty’s Taco Bell story began about 30 miles away in West Chicago when she joined our Taco Bell system in 2002 as a Team Member, working part time while raising her (then) two children. Betty says that the flexibility of the job allows her to take time away to be with her children as needed, and not worry about her job still being there for her when she returns. “That’s the reason I work for Taco Bell,” she says.
Juggling Act
Since those early days, Betty has added two more children and multiple job titles to the mix! At the encouragement of her boss at the time, Betty applied for the Shift Leader position. “I was nervous … but he convinced me,” she says. From there, she climbed the ladder even further to become an RGM. This time, she received the encouragement of a different boss, who, Betty says told her, “You can do it, Betty. You do everything!”
It’s safe to say Betty has found encouragement every step of way on her career journey with us. In the management role, she’s still able to maintain the work-life balance that’s so important to her. “My family is my priority,” she shares. Betty helps open the restaurant so she can still be there for her kids as needed in the afternoon.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!
Betty admits to worrying the RGM role would be too stressful, but she’s found the opposite to be true, in part thanks to her amazing team. “We have very good teamwork,” she says of her North Aurora crew. Hiring the right people is most important in Betty’s eyes. “They can trust me. And they can count on me,” she shares.
“[Shamrock] always cares for their people.” – Betty Arvalo, RGM
This successful leader sees herself as an extension of the Team Members. There’s no hierarchy in Betty’s eyes. “We are the same level,” she says of herself and her team. This is something she learned directly from Shamrock’s current President and CEO, Dan McGue. “He takes care of us,” she says of Dan. If you want to work for a company that truly cares, join us!
